Lock It Down Cupcakes: Carbine Adds Google Authentication Rewards
Posted on May 29, 2014 by sprinkels

If you have ever had your account hacked in a video game you know the headache and heartache it causes. Carbine is being proactive and taking steps to ensure Wildstar players account safety. Not only will the authentication process protect a playerÔÇÖs account but players who choose to follow suit will be rewarded with a title, costume piece and progression boosts!

Wildstar will be utilizing GoogleÔÇÖs 2-step Verification Application, the application is similar to World of WarcraftÔÇÖs Authenticator but is more versatile as the application translates to other services around the web. In order to setup your account with the application you will need; a Windows Phone, iOS or Android device or even a Windows PC with Net 4.0.

Set-Up Process:

Log in to your NCSoft Account through the Wildstar website and click on ÔÇ£My AccountÔÇØ then ÔÇ£AddÔÇØ next to 2-Step Verification which is found under Account Security.
Have your desired device handy with the Google Authenticator Application already installed. Once open, enter the code as instructed from your Wildstar Account (or scan the generated QR code.)
Once added, the device will portray your Wildstar login email (this can be edited at this time.)
After the 2-Step Verification is added you will receive an email confirmation.
At this point on, whenever you login, you will be met with an additional window that will require a unique set of numbers from your device.

It is quite inconvenient if you lose your device (or trade it in) so make sure to go through steps to remove the authenticator from your account before you sell/trade your device. This same 2-step method can be applied to your Google account which will increase your security even further, in the past NCSoft has recommended that players create a unique Gmail with 2-Step Verification for use on specific games (no crossover or use on other websites.)

The Rewards:

If you choose to go through this process (which Wildstar-Core absolutely recommends) you will be met with some sweet loots. The progression boosts offer 2% increase to Experience, Renown and Prestige gains (VERY handy with the upcoming Head Start.) As well as a spiffy character title; ÔÇ£Certifiably CertifiedÔÇØ and a unique costume piece; ÔÇ£Cybernetic Eyepatch.ÔÇØ

So get on it cupcakes, we know you have always wanted a one-eyed Chua!

NOOOOOOO!

I want the Authentication but I don't have a smartphone! I guess it's a conspiracy by the CIA forcing me into the purchase of a smartphone when I know all they want to do is track my every move and stick a mind probe in me! AHHHHHH!

I guess If I wrap my head in even more tin foil and wrap the smartphone in tin foil I can unwrap the phone when I need to use it and then wrap it back up.... hmm.... sounds like a plan.

On the reddit thread that someone else posted about this, maybe in Exiles forum?, there was a link to a way to do this on your PC.

UPDATE: here's the link:

For the ease of not having to dig through the Reddit pages to figure it all out here is what you do:

1 - Ensure you have a Google Account with 2-Step Authentication setup in it:
a - Login to your Google Account
b - Go to Security
c - Enable 2-Step Authentication following all the steps provided

2 - Download and Un-Zip the PC version of WinAuth and add it to your Desktop (https://code.google.com/p/winauth/downl ... 3.0.21.zip)

3 - Ensure you have Windows .NET Framework 4.0 or Newer installed. Here is a link to get it, if you do not have it (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=17851)

4 - Log-in to your Wildstar Account
a - Go to the Account Management Screen
b - Select the ADD button next to 2-Step Authentication
c - Select and Copy the Code it shows you

5 - Open WinAuth and Select the ADD button
a - Select Google from the list of types
b - Paste the Code you copied from the Wildstar Account page into the Secret Code Box in WinAuth
c - Use the 6 character Verification Code that WinAuth gives you to enter into the Wildstar Account page where it asks for the Authentication Code (you have a limited amount of time to do this)
d - Click the OKAY button in WinAuth
e - You may now enter a special Password unique to WinAuth if you wish to (this password is used every time you open WinAuth (optional)

Now from this point on, when logging into Wildstar, when a Authentication Code is requested, open WinAuth and select the Refresh button for a new 6 character Authentication Code to enter into Wildstar when logging in (you have a limited time before the code is no longer valid, if this happens just press the Refresh button again in WinAuth for a new code)... Afterwhich you can close WinAuth...

Hope this helps...
