On Twitter, they (the Carbine devs) stated that invites during this round have been driven primarily by potential beta participants' rigs (i.e., those who had beefier rigs likely saw preference given to them). They assured their legions of fans that this would change.

I wondered the same. It's one of the first beta application processes I've participated in where I have not been expected to submit my dxdiag text file. It struck me as odd as well, and suggested that this pool was not at all "random," but drawn somehow from a predetermined list of participants from other tests.
