PvP vs PvE realm

Post by Nionya » Thu Apr 04, 2013 7:32 pm

Hey everyone! One of our awesome devs noticed a bit of confusion about how we plan on implementing open world PvP in WildStar and brought it to our (our = your WildStar community team and the PvP dev team) attention this morning. Since we want to clear up any misconceptions quickly, Aether thought it would be best if I got my WildStar Central forum name registered so I can give you all some info today.

Rulesets
We intend to have two rulesets at WildStarÔÇÖs launch, a PvE and PvP ruleset.

World PvP Opportunities on PvE Ruleset
On a PvE Ruleset server, you may voluntarily flag yourself for PvP. In WildStar, there are some zones which are shared by both factions, in terms of PvE content. If youÔÇÖre flagged, you may run into opposing faction individuals who have also voluntarily flagged themselves for PvP. If you do, I hope you both have some fun
If you try to go into an opposing factionÔÇÖs city, you will be automatically flagged for PvP.

World PvP Opportunities on PvP Ruleset
On a PvP Ruleset server, PvP flagging is determined based on the zone your character is in. If you are in a zone that is affiliated with your faction, youre not flaggedbut you may voluntarily flag yourself. If you are in a zone that is affiliated with the opposing faction, you are flagged for PvP.
If youÔÇÖre in a zone that is shared by both factions, you will be flagged for PvP. YouÔÇÖll have plenty of opportunity to run into your enemy in a shared zone and slay the day away
If you try to go into an opposing factionÔÇÖs city, you are flagged for PvP (though, this is redundant on a PvP server, because youÔÇÖre likely in that factionÔÇÖs zone anyway).

Sanctuaries
We will have areas within zones or entire zones where PvP is forbidden. These areas, called Sanctuaries, will be present on both PvE and PvP rulesets.

Objective-Based Open World PvP
We understand the strong desire for this type of open world PvP and many of us here at Carbine enjoy it. That said, objective-based open world PvP is not currently a focus for WildStarÔÇÖs launch. Our intent, as IÔÇÖve stated in our Reddit AMAA, is to see how our PvP players interact with the world of Nexus so we can focus on areas which may appeal to a Wildstar PvP player for objective play before we make a deeper investment on open world PvP.

Experience
(Also from the Reddit AMAA, but I will also restate it again)
You will be able to level via PvP. You can earn experience off of player kills in the Battlegrounds and through player kills in world PvP. So, there is a little bit of incentive to kill your enemy, outside of the enemy just being an opposing faction player, on either Ruleset, because heÔÇÖs probably worth some XP.

We'll be monitoring this thread to respond to your feedback, which we welcome with open arms! Thanks for listening, everyone!

Seems pretty standard stuff for those of us that have played games like WoW. I've only leveled on a PvP server once, but I gotta say it was a great time. Most of it had to do with leveling with 2 other friends at the same time. 3 hunters are a pretty deadly group =). The other part of it was the server was new so there was much less high levels around.

I tend to roll on PVE servers mostly not because of the fights, or ganking, but because I hate having my focus interrupted. If I login with the goal of getting 2 levels done and someone keeps trying to kill me causing me to waste time killing them it bothers me. Since their model allows for XP while killing them it might be something worth doing.

The idea of leveling to cap on the bones of thousands of other players is quite appealing =)

I am a huge fan of PvP servers, although I'm not opposed to starting on a PvE server if that's the consensus among guild members.

While I understand that World PvP can delay or distract from leveling, especially in a new game where leveling zones are going to be busy with both factions, it adds an element to the game that I've enjoyed and excelled in.

I don't mind breaking from my current PvE solo objective to help a guild member, friend, or fellow ally with PvP. While it can understandably be seen by some as an inconvenience at times, I like to see it more as a constant test of skill which improves my ability to play my character to it's potential over time.

With live action combat, I imagine PvP encounters will play much differently than PvE, and the more one practices to dodge & land their best abilities, the better off they will be. Learning PvP tactics such as which abilities work best against which classes, or the most efficient combination of abilities to use against an opponent in PvP is much easier while leveling in 1v1 scenarios than it is later on in higher level, organized BGs.

In the short time that I played Age of Conan, I learned quickly that successful PvP combat involved strafing, dodging, and positioning yourself to maximize damage dealt & minimize damage received. While I am certain Wildstar will be nothing like AoC, I imagine the combat system will apply to PvP in a very similar way.

With that said, such a new and intriguing game brings new and intriguing PvE content, and defending yourself from the opposite faction while trying to accomplish open world group/adventure/zone achievements can be frustrating.

I just can't help engaging players of the opposite faction if I know I have a fighting chance, but I've never been one to corpse camp or seek lowbie zones to dominate. In my opinion, to get beaten in world PvP, as long as it's not after a large fight when I'm low health/mana, is an opportunity to improve how I would react next time. It's pretty satisfying to get jumped by a player & lose only to have the same thing happen 10 minutes later with the opposite result. They don't seem to come back as much then..

I have absolutely no qualms about leveling on a PvP server, but I know from experience that it seems that the more casual folks in the guild will suffer for it. This all depends on how WildStar tackles "ganking" though, in the traditional sense of high-level players going in and laying waste to low-level players when they're only trying to level, gather, craft, explorer, etc., and can also be accompanied by corpse camping.

Most of the PvP I do at "end game" is arenas or battlegrounds anyway, and Warplots look like they're going to work on both servers. I'll go with whatever the guild leadership decides for this one though.

I can only speak from this in the past. Historically, if given an option of pvp vs pve servers, Grievance will be on a pve server.

Currently we have a PvE guild planned for each faction. If we have enough interest we would definitely consider a PvP guild as well.

Well for what it's worth, I'm expressing my strong interest in a PvP server early, but will reiterate that I will play PvE if the support isn't there.

I'm definitely not a fan of PvP servers. I just feel like I can never relax, always looking out so that I don't get taken by surprise.

But I love arenas and battlegrounds. Because when you get the urge to kill, it's nice to know it's just a queue away.

For me PvP & PvE servers are usually worlds apart in how I look at them. In WAR you had something not so dissimilar with the RvR lakes. Difference being it would be an entire zone instead of a specific area. One way that this differs (based on the above) from MMOs in general is faction zones don't have you flagged. On a PvP server in say... WoW or Rift you are flagged 24/7, no matter where you are. Being flagged while in enemy territory makes sense, same for contested territory. Not auto-flagging players in their faction's area should help cut down on the ganking and griefing of new players and low level alts as typically joint faction areas usually start in the mid-level range on up.

In such a system, if Grievance had a strong presence there, I wouldn't be opposed to playing on a PvP server. However, in general I'm still more of a PvE person based off of those past experiences. Being griefed, ganked and corpse camped does nothing except make a keyboard warrior thump his chest and laugh at the noob. Heard the argument of 'it's what pvp really is' or 'we all had to go through it' so very many times when reading forums and game chat that it can turn the stomach, especially since usually those people doing it got to cap during launch or while being babysat by max level guildy. lol

Anyway... /rant

TL;DR, if they keep it as it says above, I'll probably roll a character to try it out, but I'm still more interested in the pve side of things. ;)
Some days all one can do is watch while the mind wages war on itself, the destruction of the emotions, self-esteem and thoughts; all the while praying that one faction doesn't cry to "launch the missiles." -- Me

Personally I've played on mostly PvP servers because of playing with my husband... Besides that I played on PvE because of the sheer fact of how many players just like to camp in areas and just be a massive bag of balls. I understand the enjoyment of PvP and PvE. I'm okay with both, just saying. But mark my words... If I get camped, I tend to remember the player's names for later. ^^
