6.2.3 Frost Mage Guide (PVE) - Updated 3/7/16

Post by RedikulouS » Thu Dec 10, 2015 1:11 pm

Hello!

This is a project IÔÇÖve been debating doing for quite some time. Since we have added an alt night to our schedule, as well as some new mages to the guild, I figured itÔÇÖs time to take the plunge.

Foreword

Let's face it, we're late in the WoD expansion and most of the other class forums are full of information pertaining to Mythic raiding, Legion, or just plain outdated. Finding anything relevant for a beginner is a time consuming headache. My goal here is to create a Basic Frost Mage Guide for PVE covering everything you need to know to get started. I don't like math, I don't like running Sims, and I don't like overly-detailed explanations, so I want to keep this as simple and straight forward as possible.

So what do I choose for talents?

Image

This is the talent setup I used for most of this expansion, which basically breaks down like this:

Tier 15 - Ice Flows is the best option here because it allows you to cast while moving. It has 3 charges and can be cast while your casting ÔÇô you donÔÇÖt have to break your DPS rotation to move out of stuff.

Tier 30 ÔÇô Both Ice Barrier and Flameglow are viable options for this tier, but neither great. Flameglow is currently a personal preference choice. I found myself casting Ice Barrier during the pull timer and then never again. Flameglow is passive, no wasting a GCD and does a decent job when taking consistent damage.

Tier 45 ÔÇô None of these are relevant for PVE.

Tier 60 ÔÇô Greater Invisibility can be amazing - if you know when to use it! Otherwise take Cauterize.

Tier 75 ÔÇô Ice Nova is easy to use ÔÇô 2 charge instant nuke, ideal for lower gear levels.

Tier 90 ÔÇô IncanterÔÇÖs Flow is a good option. ItÔÇÖs another passive and great for fights that involve moving. However, Rune of Power still has itÔÇÖs place on those low movement fights.

Tier 100 ÔÇô Thermal Void is the best option in this tier. As far as Comet Storm, it's garbage, so don't take it. Ideally for single target encounters you should be switching to Arcane. If you choose to stay frost, PC is still a viable option, however I leave the research on how to best use it up to you.

What about Glyphs?

Image

Glyph of Icy Veins ÔÇô This is a mandatory glyph!

Glyph of Splitting Ice ÔÇô Allows your Ice Lances to hit multiple targets, which is a DPS increase.

Glyph of Water Elemental ÔÇô Allows you to keep your elemental in range of the boss at all times. This is very useful for Water Jet.

Glyph of Rapid Displacement (Optional) ÔÇô Gives you two charges of Blink. Some mages use this over the Water Elemental Glyph.

So how do I play? Whats the rotation?

Before I go into the actual rotation, we need to briefly cover Water Jet.

You are going to want to create the following macro:

#showtooltip
/cast Water Jet

This macro will put the Water Jet ability of your Water Elemental on your cast bar. YOU want to be the one controlling when this ability is cast, not the AI.

I want to keep things simple and easy to follow as far as the rotation ÔÇô so letÔÇÖs assume single target boss.

1. Prepot when pull timer reaches ÔÇ£3ÔÇØ (donÔÇÖt be stingy with pots!)
2. Cast Frostbolt when pull timer is at ÔÇ£2 or 1ÔÇØ and immediately follow with Water Jet.
3. Continue casting Frostbolt during Water Jet to generate Fingers of Frost procs.
4. Water Jet ends ÔÇô Fire off all your procs.
5. Use your Ice Nova charges ÔÇô Fire off procs.
6. Use Frozen Orb ÔÇô Fire off procs.
7. If your Water Jet is off cooldown, use it again followed by Frostbolts to generate charges.
8. Rinse and repeat.

Your major cooldown is going to be Icy Veins. How and when to best use this still something I'm working on. I cast it at the beginning of the fight, and again towards the end. I try to have it ready for whenever we Lust. Depending on how long the fight is, I may cast it again in the middle.

You really halfÔÇôassed that rotation write up!

Yeah, maybe I will revisit it later. ItÔÇÖs not rocket science. Water Jet is priority. When itÔÇÖs on cooldown, you use your fillers ÔÇô Orb / Nova. When everything is on cooldown, you fill with Frostbolts. When you get procs, you use them. You just need to get a feel for it, if that makes sense?

What should I focus on as far as Stat Priority?

Intellect > Spell Power > Multistrike >= Crit / Haste, etc.

Int and SP are the most important, followed by Multistrike. Beyond that, it really doesnÔÇÖt matter. I prefer Haste to Crit. Someone did the math on it and found that they are all relatively equal. Later, when you obtain your 4pc / trinkets the stat priorities will change.

How should I enchant / gem my gear? What consumables do I use?

Like I mentioned before, this is geared toward the beginner, so you don't have to worry about hitting any break points. Just focus on stacking multistrike for now.

Neck - Enchant Neck: Gift of Multistrike
Back - Enchant Cloak: Gift of Multistrike
Rings - Enchant Ring: Gift of Multistrike
Weapon - Enchant Weapon: Mark of the Frostwolf

Gems, same thing - Greater Multistrike Taladite. Don't worry about using epic gems. I don't see much point unless its BIS Heroic or better.

For consumables you want to use Greater Draenic Intellect Flask and Draenic Intellect Potion. Eating Salty Squid Rolls will give you the +125 Multistrike buff.

I want to raid! What gear should I work on getting?

So if I was a newly dinged 100 Mage this is how I would go about gearing up to raid:

Tanaan Jungle, Baleful - specifically ÔÇ£of the Deft / of the SavageÔÇØ w/ the empowered upgrade.

Buy crafted gear / PVP gear.

Kazaak ÔÇô he drops a neck, cape, bracers, and trinket ÔÇô all useful.

Work on your Legendary Ring quest.

What gear should I be aiming for in HFC?

This is the Frost Mage BIS List for HFC (Heroic Versions):

Head - Countenance of the Revenant - Xhul'horac
Neck - Whispering Taladite Pendant of the Deft - Crafted - Jewelcrafting
Shoulders - Mantle of the Arcanic Conclave - Xhul'horac
Back - Cloak of Hideous Unity - Fel Lord Zakuun
Chest - Robe of the Arcanic Conclave - Mannoroth
Wrists - Hexweave Bracers of the Deft - Crafted - Tailoring
Hands - Gloves of the Arcanic Conclave - Socrethar
Waist - Demonbuckle Sash of Argus - Archimonde
Legs - Pantaloons of the Arcanic Conclave - Gorefiend
Feet - Bloody Dagger-Heeled Pumps - Fel Lord Zakuun
Ring - Whispering Taladite Ring of the Deft - Crafted - Jewelcrafting
Ring - Nithramus, the All-Seer - Legendary Quest
Trinket - Unblinking Gaze of Sethe - Shadow Lord Iskar
Trinket - Tome of Shifting Words - Archimonde
Weapon - Edict of Argus - Archimonde

What about AddOns? Do you use anything special?

I use WeakAuras 2 for all buff and debuff tracking.

Below you will find my personal strings for tracking major Frost cooldowns. They will change based on what talents you have chosen. Also there is a small counter for tracking Fingers of Frost procs.

For debuffs, Border's has already posted the strings - HERE. Try it out, it's amazing!

Aside from that, I basically just use what's required by Grievance (BigWigs, oRA3)

Got any HFC tricks you're willing to share?

Maybe...

Iron Reaver

- If you are targeted with Artillery during the air phase, you don't have to move out of the raid - Ice Block with 2-3 seconds left on the debuff. The orb will hit you, but no one will take damage.
- Greater Invis removes the Unstable Orb and Immolation debuffs.
- You can Blink out of the Blitz ability.

Gorefiend

- Ice Block will remove the Touch of Doom debuff without dropping a puddle. Saves floor space!

Shadow Lord Iskar

- If targeted by Fel Chakram, casting Greater Invis will cause it to not go out.

Xhul'horac

- Greater Invis can be used to remove either Void Surge or Fel Surge without dropping colored fire on the ground.

Archimonde

- You can solo soak Shadowfel Burst. Make sure to call out that you are doing so! You're raid won't need to move under you and will avoid the damage.
- Shackled Tormet can be broken with Greater Invis - no need to move!

Re: Basic Frost Mage Guide (PVE) - WIP

Post by RedikulouS » Thu Dec 10, 2015 1:13 pm

Hello again! Welcome to the long-overdue Frost Mage Guide for 4 piece + Class Trinket.

Let's just jump right into it...

Are there any changes to my Talents?

Yes, there is only one change that you need to make:

Tier 75 - Unstable Magic - Frostbolts and Frostfire Bolts now have a 30% chance to explode on impact, dealing 50% damage to the target and anything else within 8 yards.

Ice Nova can still be used in certain situations if you feel the need - (Kromok hands, Mannoroth Imps). Honestly, I would just get used to not having it in your rotation at all.

Tier 18 Set Bonuses - Frost Mage / Class Trinket

There are three main things we gain from our set bonuses:

1. Casting Water Jet automatically gives us a Brain Freeze proc.

2. Water Jet now casts for 10 seconds.

3. Fingers of Frost stack to 4 and Brain Freeze can stack to 2.

If you're at this point in the guide, then you should be familiar with using Water Jet, managing procs, etc. Concepts are the same, just taken to the next level. Let's take it even further and go over the class trinket - Tome of Shifting Words.

Tome of Shifting Words - Casting Ice Lance immediately after a Frostbolt deals 62ish% more damage.

This trinket has absolutely no stats and is considered an empty slot (which is most likely why it never shows up in AskMrRobot). However, it is BiS and very powerful if used properly.

Basically, you want to make sure to cast a Frostbolt before any given Ice Lance. This is known as weaving, and looks something like this:

Ex:

Assume Fingers of Frost stacks = 3

Frostbolt > Ice Lance > Frostbolt > Ice Lance > Frostbolt > Ice Lance, etc.

What does the rotation look like?

I donÔÇÖt want to reinvent the wheel writing up an in-depth rotation guide. Instead, I've posted a video below by Rikh of Nihilium. It is very informative (and in some cases repetitive), and what I used to learn how to optimize my rotation. Be sure to check it out!

Troggle stold my lucky horseshoe, so I don't have 4 piece! Should I still weave?

Hmm.. the Troggle is an elusive beast, known to steal loots..

The answer to that question however is - no. If you do not have 4 piece tier, then you want to use the same basic rotation in the previous section of this guide. The same goes if you do have the 4 piece, but no Tome.

I see Frost Mages with Haste enchants / gems. Do I need to switch?

Arcane is the ideal spec for all single target fights in HFC and technically if you are trying to maximize your damage, you should be playing it on said fights. Haste is the most important stat (behind Int) for Arcane, and even tho Multistrike is ours, Haste will certainly not hurt us.

However, if you want to solely play Frost, then stick with Multistrike.

Can you give me a breakdown of what talents to take for each fight in HFC?

Sure, but keep in mind this is based on my personal preference.

Hellfire Assault - UM / IF / TV

Iron Reaver - UM / IF / TV

Kromrok - UM / IF / TV

Hellfire High Council - UM / RoP / TV

Kilrogg Deadeye - UM / RoP / TV

Gorefiend - UM / IF / TV

Shadow Lord Iskar - UM / IF / TV

Fel Lord Zakuun - Evanesce + UM / RoP / TV

Xhul'horac - UM / IF / TV

Socrethar the Eternal - UM / IF / TV

Tyrant Velhari - UM / RoP or IF / TV

Mannoroth - UM / IF / TV

Archimonde - UM / IF / TV

Like I mentioned earlier, Arcane will beat out Frost on many of these fights. Personally, I'm burned out playing Arcane. This is what I use as Frost and I'm able to do competitive DPS.

Closing

Still polishing this section of the guide, but for the most part ready to call it good. There should be enough information here to (at the very least) guide you in the right direction. Again, if you have any questions or comments - feel free to ask me!

Those HFC tips are pretty slick.
You either get bitter or get better. You either take what has been dealt to you and allow it to make you a better person, or you allow it to tear you down. The choice does not belong to fate, it belongs to you.

Thanks for the comments!

This is the first time I've really tried to write up a class guide and I hope it helps. Made some edits / updates this morning and I think I'm ready to call this one good for now. Looking forward to possibly doing more come Legion.

If anyone ever has any questions, don't hesitate - I'll help you to the best of my ability!

Fire isn't really good unless you're wearing mostly heroic and mythic gear. You simply don't have the crit to make it work until then.

I enjoyed reading this immensely. While I personally enjoy running sims sometimes, a lot of the time I like to just play the class as is. That said, I play my name Arcane strictly for the simplicity in its rotation to me and find Frost confusing. Guess that's why I'm the monk healer though and not dps.
