My.com launcher eats your bandwidth

Post by Azliet » Sat Jul 18, 2015 8:32 am

Since I have a 250 GB monthly data cap, I often look at my usage to make sure I'm not downloading too much. I was surprised to see that on the days of the Stress test, the Early access and the Open beta launch I had used a combined 75 GB of my data. I never use that much in 3 day, in most case that's about what I use in a month.

So I looked at Skyforge since it couldn't be a coincidence that my bandwidth jumped on those specific days and found out that the Launcher actually acts as a torrent system to seed the installation file. It also set itself by default to launch with Windows so if you don't manually close it, you are probably wasting bandwidth when you aren't even at your computer.

To change the setting and stop the torrenting is actually very easy. Open the Launcher's settings and uncheck the option "Continue distributing when download has ended". I also removed the option to start the launch with Windows but that's just my preference.

While doing that research I came across an article from Massively OP explaining the same thing: http://massivelyop.com/2015/07/18/psa-s ... bandwidth/

Im usually pretty adamant about not letting things start with windows....or let too many things run in the background while gaming. i dont have to deal with bandwidth caps of any kind but i dont want things secretly running in the background either....if i can help it that is.

Thank you for discovering this. :)
