Class Angst

Post by Schrodinger » Fri May 23, 2014 11:38 am

Anyone else having angst about which class to play. I played all the classes to level10-11 except warrior, never liked playing a warrior. A big problem with only getting to lvl 10 is developing a deep understanding of the class. This is particularly true of healing. You canÔÇÖt start to play a healer until you get into dungeons at lvl 20.

I have been reading & watching vids on the classes, trying to glean out what I like and dislike. This is very frustrating, as well as wanting release to be NOW. I know I can play some of the classes to 20 post launch and I may have to, but it seems a bit wasteful.

So here are my class thoughts:

If I were to go skip healing then IÔÇÖd go Engineer. I love the stalker mechanics, but my heart is in a pet class & I would like to try tanking. Too bad Aurins canÔÇÖt be engineers.

However, I do enjoy healingwell I did on my shaman in WoW. I know I dont want to play a medic. That leaves the Spellslinger and Esper. This is where all those articles and videos have me shaking my head. I really don't like stationary healing, didnt in WoW and given the focus on movement I know I wont in WS. However, there are amps and maybe other things that can make an Esper more mobile. I also like the wide area heals of the Esper, besides the graphics, which are awesome. And while a Spellslinger can shoot you in the face and Esper can give you the bird.

Short of lvling both an Esper & Spellslinger to lvl 25-30 do any of you have insight into the higher level play/healing?

I think because of it being so hectic I almost think stationary healing will be a little bit more fun than in other titles. Still won't be amazingn but I bet it is fun in its own way. Challenging even

However I had the same issue as you and I wasn't sure about how I would like healing. So I hit 5-6 and did the practice bgs to try healing out in group content and it's quite fun. Maybe try that out to see how you like it?

Regardless of which one you pick, Wildstar will require groups to understand that a healer isn't like one from the game that shall not be named. You aren't going to save anyone from standing in bad. Between SS and esper, the SS is going to require a few more skill shots.

Honestly, I say play the class you like; but if you browse the Stalker class forums - probably a mistake, as they and the other class forums are quickly becoming the same kind of cesspool that WoW's did - there's a ton of drama about the viability of stalkers as both DPS and tanks, nerf whining, etc...

I was having MAJOR class angst. Now that I decided on Warrior, I'm having major appearance angst; since there's no barber and Mordesh looks are so dependent on eye color. Especially with Mechanical hair... UGH.

I feel like that's every game now. There was obviously embellishment posts back in the day... but it wasn't even close to this bad in EQ. I don't bother reading class forums anymore, because even base questions get turned into an inquisition; base questions about class rotations, become crusades over nerfing specs. I've seriously YouTube'd most class info on games, since 2009.

I also don't see it changing until a company, community and the media that covers gaming all take an aggressive stance against whiners; and that won't go well in our sensitive internet age.

I played Spellslinger, Stalker, Engineer and Warrior in beta. I didn't get very far on any of them except Spellslinger. Before I was in beta everything I saw pointed me to the SS. Not because it did OP dps or OP healing, but because everything I read and watched said that SS had the highest skillshot requirement. I enjoy being a healer, i LOVE if a healer is one that has to dps in order to hps (monk in wow, chloro in rift). Sadly WildStar does not have this (yet?), so I went with the class that would require the most attention to the group/raid/tank as possible and strive to be the best I can be with that class. SS does have more skillshot requirement when healing, and is harder to be great at. If you believe you are up to the task of being able to do that then you should play SS. I personally enjoy playing SS and will be maining a healer SS when we start raiding.

When it comes to Esper I can't tell you how the class plays in terms of dps/healer, but I can say that it will be easier to do good dps and good hps on the Esper due to their mechanics. You can change the mobility of the Esper a lot, there are many guides out there, and they can do well in any situation. They will be easier to be great at (IMHO don't start the flaming people), when doing both dps and hps.

I can say that it took me a while when lvling as SS to figure out what spells to have on my bar in order to take groups of mobs, but once I finally realized it I started to tear through groups at a time. All the classes can solo 2-4 mobs relatively well, some just require a little more spell shuffle in order to do so.

Last time I was in game, which was yesterday, I heard that the SS took a little bit of a nerf on healing. I did not look at the most recent patch notes to verify, since i don't plan on playing a SS, but just wanted to relay that. So that info could be way wrong.

There were some significant changes to SS gameplay in yesterday's patch, most of it dealing with surge. Surge cannot be used off GCD now, as well as a couple other proc abilities. I tried it out some on my lower level spellslinger, and IMO it has an overall less smooth feeling to it now.

There were also some changes to healing with increased focus cost when using a surged healing ability.

I started out with the same debate. I played a Medic uo to 20 in the early weekend beta's sure it was the class for me. It was and I liked the movement but something about it just didn't click. Now that DPS are getting used to having to stay closer and in range of medic healers I will give it another go at some point after launch. I tried the Esper but only made it to level 8 I really didn't like the spells you started with and it made me feel clunky especially after playing a medic. I then moved on and played am SS up to level 27 in beta. It was a blast!

I like DPSing on my SS. From reading on the forums people feel at 50 the dmg might be a little weak but I haven't had a problem killing things yet. I like the animations and it's an interesting mix, not as mobile as the Medic, not as stand and fire as the Esper.

From a healing perspective yoy get a little more range then you do on the Medic, but not as many huge AOE's as the Esper. I really like it though. I like putting down Void Spring by the boss, so everyone is moving inside that circle doing dmg and getting healed. The tier eight on it looks cool reducing dmg by 3%. You have a shield replenisher, and some decent aoe heals. All of it needs to be aimed though except Void Spring so people still need to be grouping up.

If you have any SS questions let me know!
