I love battlegrounds, arenas, and any other type of pvp where you volunteer to get your butt kicked but generally not a fan of (open world) pvp where you can't opt out or you always have to watch your back so you don't get pwned while minding your own business.
It's good to be able to turn off the pain every once in a while!

I go for PvE because I don't want to pay repair cost every time I get ambushed or greifed.

Playing on a PVP server has always been such a hassle. I'd rather play the game at my own pace rather than having to avoid certain zones at certain times or whatever. Let me pvp when I want to!

I'll definitely be on a PVP server. I like the laid back feel of PVE, but I also love that BOSS feel of beating down a random ganker. That feel.... oooooh, that feel. So i'll be making two leveling characters on the different servers. One for PVE guild play and one for PVP "opening up a can" play. Because that feel... oooooh, Lawd that feel.

I always prefer pve servers with organized pvp. I like the challenge more, though admittedly I am slower and not as good as I was when I was younger.

The thing that has me excited for WildStar PvP is the telegraph system. Even if the "hey, I'm going to line up in a row and so are you and we're just going to zerg one another" mindset persists, I'm hoping that the telegraph system will prove that strategy will have its day in the sun once more.
Knock on wood!

That raises a good point. I think open world pvp tends to lead more to skill of strategy and organized pvp on a pve server tends to lead more to skill of playing your class. It would be great to have both in one.
They seem to be maybe getting closer with these newer large scale pvp events where you have to overtake your opponents castles or territories.

I love PvP and basically all I do when I log into SWTOR is dailies in between queue's BUT unless they do a downscale in zones like in GW2 (perfect for open world PVP IMO) I will only roll on PVE servers. Open world PVP is awesome in theroy but if bored endgame baddies can camp me in STV (WoW days will never leave me!) and I have no chance to blow them up unless i log into my other toon and fly all the way to my currently being camped toon to eat their face....
Okay end rant... PVE for me until they fix server rulesets.

I agree Poet. Being preyed upon by a top level gankers isn't fun, unless you can get someone like Daddybigtime to come and beat them down. Watching a high level guildie surprise attack a ganker is just as fun as doing the deed yourself!
