Does anyone know if this is based off the phone number or the phone? Basically getting new phone but everything is staying the same. Wondering if that will mess up the app.

It's based on the phone, but it's really easy to move it from one phone to another:

I just did this a couple months ago and was very painless. As long as you still know your google account password and stuff it's no sweat. I don't know what I would do without the Google suite of apps. I love having all of my stuff tied to one google account.

Ive lost accounts due to not having an authenticator so personally I wouldn't give it up for anything when it's available. Let us know if you do decide to do that though and how it worked out for you.
