Medic Concern

Hello all!

I am having a little bit of concern for the Medic class in particular. In all the videos I have seen thus far it seems to be portrayed as a "hybrid" healer/dps melee or mid range. That is all good, but is someone that is going hybrid going to have enough healing output to really heal enough in a raid/dungeon? Will be get DPS'rs that say they can heal just to not have a 3 hour queue?

My concern is that many people will play a medic thinking they can DPS and heal a dungeon... and if that is the case why would people bother to bring Spellslinger or Esper healers who's DPS (from my understanding) will be lower.

Not trying to open a can of worms here but that came into my head while watching the IGN Medic gameplay video.

Thoughts? Am I just being paranoid? Anyone have experience in other games with these kinds of classes and how it works?

In my opinion it will be fine. Any of the other healers can also have a DPS spec as well and will be able to swap between the roles pretty easily out of combat according to the dev streams. I just think the medic will bring other things to the table that the other 2 healers wont have necessarily. In my opinion a good group makeup will have a variety of healer classes so there will be overlap.

Can of worms? Not at all! This is the place to discuss concerns! Most of your concerns are already solved. You're part of Grievance! You won't have to PUG a dungeon and worry about non-healing healers or queues. The other concern should be okay in that non-medic healers will still be viable as stated in (I believe) the Spellslinger Dev speak Also you can alter your character to be more or less DPs in between combat.

I also agree with what NightAngel stated.

I think by far the larger concern with Wildstar will be player quality (so nice to be part of Grievance and not worried about that part) and people playing classes that mesh with their brains. In the Devspeak Medic heals seemed mostly freeform or field based.

I think the majority of WoW's one time 12 million players will struggle with Wildstar's mechanics and play style especially at first.

Well in a 20/40 man raid, you will certainly need more than 1 or ever 2 healers :) I think a variety of abilities between the classes will be ideal. Even if medic is there to take some of the pressure off the main healers while still contributing some dps, they will be helpful and viable IMO.

I think it will be fine. A current problem of many of the current MMO's is the idea that they are trying to make every class perfect for every situation. All this does is make a bunch of classes that are just different faces of the same playstyle. Having specialty really helps make an mmo shine. A couple of examples for you:

In early WOW it was fun that the Hunters were considered the best at pulling: they could get the best range and redirect their threat towards the tank.

A WOW warlock could give crucial raid member a soulstone so they could rezz in combat.

In Wildstar I am seeing some of these specialties crop up and it will diversify:

Warrior is made to stand there and take the punches to the face, whereas a stalker can survive by evasion and self buffs. This makes the stalker uniquely suited for kiting tanking and any fights that should require a lot of movement.....essentially a lot of off-tank situations.

Medics vs the other two healers look to be shaping up the same way.

I'm sure just like any other MMO, especially upon release, class balancing will not be 100% and certain people will be better at certain roles for DPS, healing, and tanking.

That being said, the way they will be doing your skill set picks means you can be 100% one role (such as healing) or 50% in two roles, or some other percentile of your choice. Unlike other MMOs there isn't really a hard "spec" like we are used to with talent trees and people will have to get adjusted to that since it's mostly based off the skills that you choose to bring out on your hot bar then followed by the amp system to give more of a min/max feel on your direction of extra stats (which is respeccable I would imagine if they haven't said so already). Due to this... technically esper, medic, and spellslinger can all heal + dps in a given dungeon. Not just the medic.

I think in the end the only true difference of the healing classes will be what support they bring to the party as they would likely do the usual thing games do and bring a class that has a focus of shields (absorb shields)... a class that has a focus of area heals.... then a class with a focus of single target heals. Winners in all different situations.

Well I can tell quickly that I got in with the right group of people.

I plan on playing a "punch me in the face please" Warrior so I am all about some kind of "melee healer" to help me out... I guess my bigger concern really was for the general community. I have never been the kind of person that utterly refuses to pug. I am more than willing to help out other players but it gets to a point where I just want o play with me homies (as Mr. Frost would say).

That being said, I am still very excited for the game and its mechanics... Bring on the Beta!!
