If you look at the game site, and/or have watched some of the videos where paths are mentioned they talk about discovering secret areas, opening up new wilderness, building new spaceports, testing new weapons, etc. What I don't get is how this works ffrom one player to the next.
For example, say my settler builds a hospital. Does that mean I am the only one who gets to build a hospital? What if another settler wants to build one? Could there potentially be hospitals dotting the landscape? What about discovering a new piece of the map? How does that work for explorers? You can only discover a new place once, and once you do it's no longer undiscovered for everyone else.
So what I am confused about is how these path objectives fit into the game if everyone is working on the same ones.

Settlers I believe work off of the plug system for most grand structures (i.e. not campfires) once one is put down other settlers can help that one from deteriorating by repairing it and that is part of what a settler does. Some buildings have tiers where lots of settlers are needed to help construct it and maintain it but when you reach a certain tier it gives certain benefits (quest givers etc) but deteriorates rapidly.
As for explorers it is exploring things like mountain tops, caves underneath the earth etc. Not like actual parts of the world or not even really an eve style wormhole system.
Here is a video that helps explain the path system a little better (sorry its not the best quality but I think its one of the better vids on paths.
I know that wasnt really comprehensive but I hope that sheds some light on it for you.

Ok I found it. Thanks. Watching it.....and picked up on something he said. Zones are seamless, no loadbars unless you switch back and forth between continents or go into space. Space. Is there also going to be a space element to this game?

There are some other vids in that section that dont talk directly about paths but also have info on them in them if you get bored enough

They did say there will be some space areas, like a moon zone that has super low gravity so you can super jump
